- ORGANIC MOLECULES CONTAIN CARBON --> carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, ATP
- monomer = one unit of a molecule and polymer = multiple monomers which form a larger molecule
2 MAIN TYPES OF REACTIONS:
- DEHYDRATION SYNTHESIS --> Monomers are joined to create polymer(s) with the production of water molecule(s) [water comes from an -H and -OH group taken from the monomers, each monomer can give either an H or OH but NOT BOTH
- HYDROLYSIS --> Polymer(s) are broken down into smaller monomers and water is given away (i.e. the H and OH link up to separate monomers) [OPPOSITE OF DS]
